British Natural Bodybuilding
Federation (BNBF) Welsh Championships Contest Results and Recap
July 4, 2010
Dolman Theatre, Kingsway, Newport
The 4th qualifier of the 2010 season saw the BNBF
arrive in Newport, Wales, for the 5th annual rendition of the Welsh
Championships. The intimate Dolman Theatre would once again play host to these
championships and house an incredible 50 competitors – by far the largest
competitor entrant for the Welsh Championships to date. After an arduous task of
cleaning the venue, erecting stands and banners, not to mention beautifully
setting the stage, the 2010 Welsh Championships were ready to commence.
Judges for this show were BNBF Pro’s Jane Carter, Dawn Roberts, Annabel Ottey,
joined by fellow pro’s Daz Cooper, David Kaye and BNBF chairman, Vicky McCann.
Assuming the role of head judge for the day was none other than Mr International
Head Judge and BNBF Pro, Kerry Napier.
Taking on the job of M.C for today’s show was the ever entertaining Dave
O’Brien. Let the competition commence!
Teens - Sponsored by Body Bionic Gym
In 1st place was Matthew Dopson. Matthew won this class with the best balance of
shape, condition and presentation. His chest was a particular standout and his
condition good for a teen competitor. Matthew must work on keeping his legs
tight at all times to display the condition he actually has.
In 2nd was Kurt Davies. Kurt is a very muscular teen competitor and displays
sound overall balance. Kurt’s back is particularly impressive for a teen. I felt
that his tan was a little pale for most of the day and he should work on making
his poses a little tidier.
Taking 3rd place was Lewis McKenna. Lewis had the best presentation skills of
all the teen competitors and displayed his physique very well on stage. Lewis
has a big frame and with a little more muscle and better conditioning should
make a very good teen competitor indeed.
Rounding off the top 4 was Joshua Dickens. Another muscular teen, Joshua
possesses particularly strong legs and great overall balance. Joshua’s
presentation could have been a lot better, with regards to both posing and his
tan which seemed to run very badly during pre-judging.
Also competing: David Hobbs, Samual Cockle, Joel Cousins, Joshua Gibbons, David
Riseborough.
Juniors - Sponsored by
www.fitshopsupplements.co.uk
In 1st place was a delighted Jason Rose. Great shape and symmetry from Jason,
with particularly impressive upper body muscularity. On this occasion Jason was
a little soft in comparison to what we’ve come to expect of a top Junior in
recent years and should make improvements in condition a priority for the
Finals. Nail that condition Jason!
In 2nd was Rory Sutherland. Superb shape from Rory and good overall
conditioning. I felt that during pre-judging Rory was a little slow to get
moving and needs to assert himself more forcefully on stage come the finals. In
addition his tan was too pale. Nevertheless, great potential from Rory to do
very well at the finals.
In 3rd was Jay Davey. A big Junior with a great shoulder width and an impressive
X frame. On this occasion, Jay was just not conditioned enough to place any
higher and should work on this aspect for future outings.
Rounding off the top 4 was Paul Lawrence. Good conditioning from Paul, arguably
the best of the class. Paul has a powerful looking torso and posed with
conviction. I feel Paul’s legs were a little slight in comparison to his upper
half and should look to improve on this for the future.
Also competing: Ashley Morgan, Marvin Thomas, Nathan Willmott.
Masters - Sponsored by Body Masters Newport
Winning in convincing fashion was Brian Skeete. A good performance from Brian –
great X frame combined with adequate conditioning. If Brian can sharpen up his
condition further he will be tough to beat at the finals later this year.
In 2nd was Barry Williams. A good showing from Barry with excellent presentation
on stage. Barry has very strong legs, however they do seem to overpower his
upper half somewhat and he should make upper body mass and overall conditioning
a priority for future competitive outings.
In 3rd was Terry Wyatt. A remarkable outing from Terry considering he was
involved in a near fatal car accident just 3 years ago. Great condition and
rugged muscle from Terry, although he needs to improve on his presentation with
regards to both posing and his tan.
In 4th was Nicholas Richards. Good overall balance from Nicholas with an
impressive set of arms. On this occasion he really needed better conditioning to
place any higher.
Masters O’ 50’s - Sponsored by The Bay Fitness
Taking home the 1st place trophy was George ‘the
razor’ Kerr. This is the best we’ve seen George in a good while – balanced,
conditioned and very dry - George won this class easily. His presentation was,
as always, flawless and once again the audience were treated to his now
trademark headstand.
In 2nd was Peter Middleton. Peter has a very complete physique with no glaring
faults. Peter really just needs to bring better conditioning to challenge the
likes of George and he should also pay attention to improving his compulsory
poses.
In 3rd was Dennis Spraggs. Dennis was similar to Peter in that he has a
generally complete physique. On this occasion, however, condition was not quite
tight enough and his posing and tan were poor. A little bit of work on
presentation would make a huge difference.
Guest Star – BNBF/IFPA Pro Daz Cooper
After a short interval, the Welsh audience awaited the arrival of BNBF Pro and
guest star, Daz Cooper. As the curtain was drawn, rising from the smoke appeared
a figure dawned from head to toe in a black cloak, wielding the infamous sword
reserved only for an overall British Champion. As the music broke through the
auditorium, so to did Daz Cooper into a flurry of trademark poses, wowing
onlookers with his muscular thickness and density. As expected his trademark
quads were huge and billowing and his physique displayed evidence of greater
things to come from Daz in his Pro outings in Britain and Washington later this
year. A job well done Mr Cooper, best of luck with your upcoming competitions.
Miss Figure - Sponsored by Creative Fitness Marketing
Taking 1st place was Ildiko Iliffe. Superb poise and stage presence from Ildiko,
combined with great overall shape, balance and tone ensured that she came away
the victor in this class. Ildiko should focus on refining her abdominal and
thigh pose as she failed to execute this pose as effectively as she perhaps
could, and in turn display her true physique. Nevertheless a fine performance.
Taking 2nd place was Frances Heywood. Frances, like Ildiko was an impressive
figure competitor with arguably the better conditioning of the two competitors.
This condition was most evident in her abdominal and thigh pose which was
excellent. Frances should focus on increasing shoulder width and refrain from
‘pinching’ her lats during her poses.
Novice - Sponsored by Muscle and Fitness Gym
In 1st place was Kenneth Mudoola. Kenneth sneaked the victory in this class with
his superior shape and dominant size. Kenneth’s arms in particular were a stand
out body part, huge and full. Nevertheless, Kenneth will need to make a
considerable improvement to his condition, especially in his legs, if he is to
challenge for the British title.
Taking a close 2nd was Andrew Smerdon. A good performance from Andrew, great
balance, terrific lats and superior conditioning was very nearly enough to take
the novice title. Come in even tighter for the finals Andrew and you will not be
overlooked.
In 3rd was James Tantram. Plenty of thick, heavy muscle on display from James.
On this occasion however, James was just not in the required condition to place
any higher. In addition his tan was too pale. Great potential to be an imposing
novice though James.
In 4th was David Bate. David, like James, was very heavily muscled with great
balance but on this day was just not in adequate condition to challenge for top
honours. Again another competitor to fall foul of a poor tan. Once more lots of
potential from David though.
Lightweight Mr - Sponsored by 24hr Gym
Taking home the title was an elated Darren Loxton. A combination of sound
balance, muscular development, dry conditioning and superior presentation saw
Darren take home the win in convincing fashion. His triceps in particular were
very impressive. Overall a great performance Darren.
In 2nd was Philip Brown. Fantastic upper body conditioning from Philip,
showcasing deep separation and dryness. His lower half was not quite up to par
with that of his upper half and also failed to pose his legs well enough to
challenge Darren. You have a great physique Philip, consider your posing for
future outings.
In 3rd was Ryzard Tokarczyk. No shortage of muscle on Ryzard’s frame, and when
combined with sound overall balance and symmetry a top 3 finish was always on
the cards. Ryzard really needs to take his condition to the next level now if he
is to challenge for top honours as a lightweight.
Rounding off the top 4 was Chi Wong. Beautiful symmetry from Chi caught the eye
of the judges early, combined with sound balanced. Chi struggled in the
muscularity round slightly due to a lightly muscled frame being a little of what
would be classed as rock hard conditioning. Plenty of potential for the future
though Chi, well done.
Also competing: Iqbal Hussain, Chris Flanagan.
Middleweight Mr - Sponsored by Monster Gym
Grabbing the win in a very tight class was former British Lightweight Champion,
Glen Danbury. Glen was very densely muscled, with his trademark thighs big and
sweeping and showcasing great overall symmetry. Glen was, however, somewhat down
on the conditioning we’ve seen him in before and subsequently lacked any real
detail across his physique, most notably in his upper half. Come on Glen, time
to nail that condition!
Finishing a close 2nd was Lawrence King. Lawrence was impressive on this outing,
displaying great detail and superb balance. What separated him and Glen was
muscle maturity, particularly evident in rear poses where Lawrence lacked the
thickness of the winner’s physique. All in all, an impressive performance and
Lawrence should look forward to the finals very positively indeed.
In 3rd was Lewis Hort. Fabulous upper body muscularity from Lewis, thick, dry
and full. Lewis was, however, weaker in the lower half and in this company
struggled to compete with the top two competitors.
Heavyweight Mr - Sponsored by Dave’s Gym
In 1st place was Mark Claxton. A convincing win for Mark who dominated the class
from the outset. Mark has used his time away from competition to great effect,
bringing to the stage a fine mix of muscularity, condition and balance – a very
complete package. I know that mark was not peaking for this show which
underlines how well he has prepared for this year’s competition. Well done Mark.
In 2nd place was last year’s novice champion, Samuel Fomba. A good showing from
Samuel, showcasing great symmetry and upper body muscularity. His legs, however,
were not conditioned to a level required to challenge the winner and
subsequently had to settle for 2nd place. Nail that condition for the finals,
Samuel.
In 3rd was Anthony Potts. Anthony is a very tall competitor and as such, really
needs more mass to fill out his frame and be competitive as a heavyweight. I
would say his lower half overpower his upper body slightly and he should bear
this in mind when preparing for future outings.
Rounding off in 4th place was Nick Openshaw. Nick possesses great shoulder width
and an impressive lat spread. However, his lower half is somewhat slight in
comparison to his upper body and Nick must rectify this in order to be more
competitive as a heavyweight. It’s all about finding that balance, Nick.
Miss Physique - Sponsored by PhysEQ Magazine
Taking home the title was Carole Nicholls. With the reduction of physique
competitors from two to just one, Carole took to the stage to showcase what she
has brought to the Welsh championships. Despite being the sole physique
representative, Carole seemed to enjoy her time on stage and received great
applause from the Welsh crowd. A very balanced physique, but more size and
condition will be required to challenge at the finals. Well done nonetheless,
Carole.
Best Wheels - Sponsored by Udo’s Choice
Mark Claxton
Best Presentation - Sponsored by 247 Bodybuilding
Female – Ildiko Iliffe
Male – Lawrence King
Overall Mr -
Sponsored by www.usn.co.uk
Mark Claxton
In the end a convincing win for Mark. His balance of size, condition and
dominant stage presence was just too much for the rest of the competitors on the
day, and Mark was rightfully elated to be crowned BNBF Welsh Overall Champion,
2010.
