British Natural Bodybuilding Federation (BNBF) Southern Championships Contest Report and Results

June 20, 2010

The Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis

Judging: Nigel Davis (head judge), Jane Carter, Ann Gardener, Chris Nsubuga, Annie Ottey, Dawn Roberts.

Competition Recap and Results

The BNBF Southern championships was once again held at the Alexander Theatre in Bognor Regis , it’s a great venue with tiered seating and plenty of backstage dressing rooms, along with a prime location right on the seafront.

Despite having spent the previous day setting up and running the RAF qualifier, the BNBF team were up at 5am for the journey south and by the time the competitors arrived for registration everything was organised to the usual high standard with the trademark BNBF backdrop and great lighting.

Prejudging started at 1pm prompt with 51 competitors eager to show the results of their weeks of dieting and hard work. Whilst many of us can train and improve our physiques not many have the discipline and determination to handle a pre-contest diet!

The Novices were on first, with 12 competitors. This class is designed for those who have never placed top 3 in a competition and is often a judging headache with a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Jamie Alderton (1) immediately stood out with his powerful shape, showing both symmetry and size with a lovely quad sweep, wide capped delts and full muscles. Today Jamie lacked great condition and he needs to work on posing his legs as we only saw flashes of detail. But he will be one to watch at the finals. Daniel Barnett (3) was a little smaller but had very pleasing symmetry and structure with nice tight condition. Greg Smith (10) had good structure and was nicely conditioned although his tan was not dark enough, Greg showed good symmetry in the front poses but he was not posing his legs well from the rear. Dan Marashi (7) was in good condition all over and although his structure was not immediately eyecatching he displayed good muscularity and separations. Clint Oliver (9) was another novice in good condition, showingd some nice hamstring detail but lacking size in his legs and Clint needs to work on developing a sweep to the quads. Shaun Hurworthy (6) was in good condition but lacked the size to be competitive in this class. Dean Doncaster (5)was in good condition and displayed a lovely X shape, he too needs a bit more size to be competitive in this class (for some reason his tan was very messy, so he needs to have a look at his skin prep and tanning method). Chad Bond (4) had good upper body size and showed condition in his hamstring poses but his symmetry was not balanced and some attention to his posing wouldand a darker tan would display his physique to greater advantage.

The remaining competitors lacked the necessary condition to be competitive today.

Next up were the Teens, just 2 competitors in this class but both gave a good account of themselves and had obviously worked hard. Max Davis (15) carried some nice upper body muscularity particularly in his rear double bi pose, however as is often the case with the younger competitors he needs to build some size on his legs in order to balance out his physique. A darker tan and improved posing would also improve his presentation. Oliver Fulljames (16) showed nice muscularity and size for a teen with some good posing, particularly in his side tricep pose and showed clear hamstring detail in his rear poses.

Third class today was the Juniors (under 23 on the day of the British Finals) with seven competitors. First on stage, Lee Constantinou (18) immediately stood out with exceptional condition and dryness throughout his physique with feathered quads, hamstring detail and striations galore – very impressive on his first outing. Whilst not the biggest competitor on stage, Lee had good symmetry along with sufficient size which was enhanced by his immaculate condition and tight waistline. Victor Dwamema (19) showed some impressive quad sweep and upper body size combined with a tiny waistline but wasn’t always posing his legs hard enough and will need better condition in order to crack top 3. Steve Gardener (20) had good size although lacked taper so needs to work on his upper body width and was a little soft to be competitive. Dean Goodwin (21) also lacked condition and needs to build a little more leg size in order to balance his physique.

Michael Goodwin (22) was very impressive and was the most heavily muscled in this class, his condition was a little off today but he has great structure and with his wide shoulders and strong legs he could do very well at the finals if he can get into tip top condition. Scott Hayes (23) had achieved nice condition and had good symmetry but needs a little more size and some work on his posing in order to present the best shape to the judges. William Morgan (24) was another strong competitor with lovely shape and size, like Michael his condition was a little off, but if they both come in leaner we will have a battle on our hands in September. Ben Sibley (25) was in pretty decent condition with nice size and structure but this was going to be a tough class.

Masters

In a line up of 4 over 40s Shawn Greenfield (26) showed nice condition and although not heavily muscled in the legs he always poses his hamstrings well, showing nice detail which with his neat waistline gives him a lovely rear bicep pose although he has a tendancy to hunch over a little in his chest pose. Felix McAlinden (27) did not bring his usual sharp condition to the stage today and we hope to see him back later in the year battling for his place in the finals. Graham Miller (28) was the hardest and most muscular competitor in this class with notable condition in his abs (where many of the masters struggle a little...) However, Graham’s posing had a tendancy to hide rather than display his physique, particularly in the rear poses, and some work in this area will greatly enhance his appearance. David Whately (29) in his third appearance at the Southern I believe was a little softer than last year but has nice size and always enjoys his time on stage.

Masters over 50

Two of these competitors were actually over 60 but with just three in total this was judged as one over 50 class. Andrew Burgess (30) looked very serious but hopefully will be a little more relaxed next time. It is very difficult to maintain muscle mass later in life but Andrew had clearly worked hard to keep his body strong and he displayed reasonable condition although his tan was too light to be effective under the strong stage lights. Paul Phillips (31) our second over 60, was in good condition with nice muscularity; Paul displayed his quads well but would benefit from working on showing some hamstring detail before the finals.

Mario Watts (52) has an incredibly youthful physique for a man in his 50’s with full round muscle bellies and smooth skin, he also benefits from good presentation and posing. Mario was in good condition today but would benefit from developing a little more flare to his quads to enhance his symmetry.

Figure

Four ladies brought a little glamour to the stage in the ever-popular figure class. This now comprises three rounds, the symmetry (quarter turns), ab and thigh round and the evening T Walk, each of which scores equally.

Kim Byrne (33) has made improvements on last year and was much tighter all over , especially in the lower body. Kim posed very well, showing her tight midsection and full shapely deltoids; with a very nice ab and thigh pose, showing nice development in the quads with visible abdominals whilst still looking feminine. Louise Dyer (34) looked nervous and rather hesitant but executed her poses nicely, she is very tall and slender and whilst she displayed good condition all over she lacked the muscle required for this class.

Britt Jensen (35) was very balanced with a lovely lat taper and shapely muscle development, she was a little soft today and some of her poses were slightly awkward, but she presented herself confidently with a lovely tan and shows promise. Investment in a competition bikini would also enhance her shape and presentation. Sharon Magee started out a little hesitantly but seemed to gain confidence as the class progressed. Sharon has some nice visible muscle tone but was a little too soft in the legs and needs to work on developing more back and shoulder width to balance out her physique.

Lightweights

Charlie Bell entered as a middleweight but weighed in as a lightweight, giving a total of 9 in this class today. Carl Constanza (37) has good size and symmetry and posed well but was too soft to be competitive today. Scott Galton (38) was very impressive with great X shape, flaring quads, detailed hamstrings and a narrow waist. As one of the shorter competitors Scott looked very full and thickly muscled enhanced by his excellent condition and symmetry. Scott had a slight tendency to close his back in his rear poses. Ladislav Piga (38) was a little light in the legs, which detracted from his symmetry, however he was nicely conditioned and posed well with a particularly pleasing rear bicep pose. Chris Redmond (40) has good symmetry and was in excellent condition making him appear full and hard particularly in his legs which were smothered in veins. If memory services me correctly he has made significant improvements since last year. Chris further enhances his physique with great posing and an excellent tan.

Bazza Ridge (41) was very nicely conditioned with lovely symmetry but needs a little more size to be competitive in this quality of line up. Martyne Skyalyne (42) is another competitor with good symmetry but a little lightly muscled for this class; he also needs to be leaner in order to show his muscularity to greater effect. Ryzard Tokarizyk (43) has plenty of muscle but was rather hunched in many of his poses which I felt didn’t do his physique justice. Ryzard was in good condition but he did not display good symmetry, which may be aided by lifting his chest and adding some width to his lat spread in order to present a better structure.

Lee Wilson (44) has lovely symmetry with a tiny waistline and was in very good condition. He posed well, creating pleasing shapes with a wide back and very complete physique, his arms and deltoids are particularly impressive without detracting from his symmetry. Charlie Bell (46) was in good condition and his posing has improved greatly since last year and he has a full upper body with plenty of detail but as a slightly taller competitor he would benefit from a little more leg size in order to add balance to his physique. Charlie has a slight tendency to look a bit disorganised and dishevelled on stage and a bit more focus and attention to detail may help his presentation.

Middleweights

Karl Airey (45) (last year’s Southern novice winner I believe) was hard and dry with good symmetry and the most size in the class. However his tan was a little light and he didn’t always pose his quad detail sufficiently. Lee Frapple (47) has moved from the Juniors into the weight classes and presented himself very well. Lee has lovely symmetry and an extremely pleasing shape with a tiny waistline, however his tan needs to be darker and on this occasion he lacked the size and condition to match the top 3. Matthew Woodhart (48) and Lawrence King (52) who dropped down from the Heavyweight class at weigh-in, were closely matched; both displayed good size and condition, Matthew was slightly harder whilst Lawrence had slightly better symmetry.

Heavyweights

Sotonye Dukubo (49) was very impressive with flaring quads showing a nice amount of detail. Sotonye is heavily muscled with a huge back and a narrow waist, giving him a very good X shape, although slightly let down by weak calves. In the front poses he was very full with nice cuts but was a little soft in the rear poses. Tim Griffin (50) has a very complete physique with great structure but wasn’t quite hard enough and seemed almost relaxed in his posing. Tim has lovely leg shape for a tall man, with a good quad sweep, full hamstrings and calves.

Mike Hodgson (51) was in nice condition with impressive abdominals and full arms and deltoids however he was another competitor who would benefit from more size and detail on his legs in order to present a more balanced physique. Nick Openshaw (53) was nicely muscled with a similar level of condition as Mike but he displayed his legs a little better, showing good cuts in all poses. Nick has a fairly thick waistline which would benefit from a little more quad sweep and some work on his lat posing.

Ms Physique

Just two ladies in this class. Eve Day (54) was significantly down on the excellent condition she displayed last year and as a result was not able to display her muscularity to great effect. Eve has lovely leg shape and good calves but needs to balance her symmetry with more width in the upper body. Flick Williams (55) has made significant improvements to her symmetry with a wider back, fuller deltoids and tight muscular midsection but her condition needs to improve in order to best display her muscularity. Flick’s presentation was immaculate and she enhanced her shape with some lovely posing.

The Evening Show

The show re-commenced with a full auditorium and the usual “smoke and lights”, at the evening show each competitor performs their own 60 second routine to music, giving them the chance to present their physique to best advantage. This round is scored equally with the symmetry and muscularity rounds. After the routines, the class line up for some compulsory poses while the judges complete their scorecards, and then a few minutes posedown whilst the scores are tallied and placings are confirmed. The compere tonight was Dave O’Byrne whose usual baritone dropped a further octave due to a sore throat.

First back on stage were the Novices. Most of these competitors looked a little harder than in pre-judging. Although Jamie Alderton had great symmetry and was the biggest in the class his condition was a little off and Daniel Barnett’s detailed legs and hardness gave him the edge and he won the class. Greg Smith’s strong structure and symmetry gave him third place over Dan Marashi’s muscularity and detail. This was a strong class and top four received invites to the British Finals.

1st Daniel Barnett, 2nd Jamie Alderton, 3rd Greg Smith, 4th Dan Marashi

Next up, our Teen class. Both the lads performed nice confident routines and Oliver Fulljames’ size and structure saw him in first place with Max Davis in second. Both were invited to the Finals.

Lee Constantinou performed first in the Junior class and if anything he looked even drier and harder than at pre-judging. Michael Goodwin’s legs also looked a little more detailed this evening. All the Juniors performed nice routines with William Morgan putting on an unusual but entertaining minute (however, from a judging perspective if the class is close I feel it is best to use that 60 seconds to pose hard and display the best possible physique). It was great to see the camaraderie and sportsmanship shown by these young lads in the posedown, and they all seemed to have enjoyed their day on stage. Lee’s exceptional condition took first place over Michael’s size and structure with William third. All three were invited to the Finals and if Michael and William use the next 12 weeks to match Lee’s condition we will have a very impressive Junior class in Glasgow.

1st Lee Constantinou, 2nd Michael Goodwin, 3rd William Morgan.

Masters

The over 40s all performed nice tidy routines with Graham Miller looking even harder than in the afternoon. David Whately always puts on a good routine and didn’t let us down this year. Graham’s sheer size and condition gave him a clear win, with Shawn’s tight waistline and detailed legs giving him second place over David who has a nice physique but was too soft to place higher today.

1st Graham Miller, 2nd Shawn Greenfield, 3rd David Whately

Masters Over 50

Mario Watts was impressive with his full shapely muscles and smooth presentation, giving him top honours over the two over 60 competitors. Paul Phillips size and condition gave him second place with Andrew Burgess in third. All three were invited to the British Finals in their respective age classes.

1st Mario Watts, 2nd Paul Phillips, 3rd Andrew Burgess

Figure

The figure girls perform a T walk which should consist of a single pose at rear centre stage, a walk to the front with 4 quarter turns, then a single pose at each front corner, with a final pose front centre and a walk off to the rear. There was a fair bit of variety in today’s performances and whilst the poses are entirely at the girls’ discretion it is important that they stick to the walk criteria in the finals.

In the T walk the judges are looking for poise and confidence as well as structure, muscle tone and shape. Kim Byrne performed a confident walk with some lovely poses. Louise Dyer struggled a little with very high heels and although she looked rather nervous she executed a nice neat T walk. Britt Jensen has a lovely shape enhanced by a perfect tan, she looked a little nervous in the walk but with some posing practice and a little more confidence she will do very well. Sharon seemed more relaxed and confident and performed a nice neat T walk.

Whilst Britt had a lovely shape and symmetry she was a little soft today, Kim showed a nice level of muscle and condition giving her first place. Both girls received an invite to the Finals.

1st Kim Byrne, 2nd Britt Jensen, 3rd Sharon Magee

Lightweight

Chris Redmond gave an entertaining routine, dragging his hoover on stage wearing a wig and mini skirt (a Freddie Mercury moment I believe!). His impressive condition along with size and symmetry won him this class although Scott Galton’s legs, strong shape and detailed cuts meant it was a close contest. Lee Wilson’s muscularity and condition gave him third over Martyne Skyalyne who needs a little more size to place higher. All four were invited to the finals.

1st Chris Redmond, 2nd Scott Galton, 3rd Lee Wilson, 4th Martyne Skyalyne

Middleweights

Lee Frapple’s lovely shape is extremely pleasing but on this occasion he was outmuscled, however he should be pleased with his first outing in the weight classes and with more muscle maturity his structure could take him a long way. In the end Karl Airey’s complete package gave him the middleweight title whilst Lawrence King’s balance and leg shape placed him above Matthew Woodhart. Top 2 were invited to the Finals.

1st Karl Airey, 2nd Lawrence King, 3rd Matthew Woodhart, 4th Lee Frapple.

Heavyweights

Nice to see 4 good competitors in the heavyweight class. Sotonye Dukubo’s leg sweep and overall mass were too much for the other competitors, although with better condition Tim Griffin could be challenging for a top placing. Mike Hodgson had a pleasing shape and nice upper body mass but Nick Openshaw displayed a little more detail and symmetry to take third place. Top 2 to the British Finals.

1st Sotonye Dukubo, 2nd Tim Griffin, 3rd Nick Openshaw, 4th Mike Hodgson.

Ms Physique

These ladies both had immaculate tans and performed nice routines. Flick Williams moves very well and presented her physique beautifully. Flick displayed nice upper body width giving her the symmetry and size to win the class, along with an invite to the British Finals, where she will need to be much harder to place well at the finals. Winner only invited to the finals.

1st Flick Williams. 2nd Eve Day.

Overall

Unfortunately several class winners were unable to wait for the overall judging, so the winners of the Teen, Junior, Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight classes made up the Overall line up.

As always, the overall is a tough one, would Sotonye’s sheet size out muscle the others? or would Chris’s condition and symmetry win him the title. Karl probably had the best combination of size and condition but was struggling to maintain the poses in his legs. The Oliver Fulljames (our teen) naturally did not have the size to be competitive in this mature line up, and Lee Constantinou (junior) whilst displaying probably the best condition on stage, did not have the maturity of muscle to match the other class winners.

In the end, Karl Airey, our Middleweight champion, was crowned BNBF Overall Southern Champion 2010 much to his surprise and delight.

Other Awards

Flick Williams deservedly won the Female Best Presentation trophy for her lovely posing and immaculate presentation. Lee Constantinou with his perfect tan and smooth posing was awarded the Male Best Presentation trophy. Scott Galton’s fantastic leg structure and condition made him a clear winner of the Best Wheels trophy.
