Show(s) Promoted

The OCB Circle City Championships which is scheduled each year for the end of May.

The OCB Mr/Ms Natural Indiana is Sept 26th, 2009 It is a Pro Qualifier this year

Which Organizations have you promoted with?

OCB - Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders

Why do you choose to work with this organization?

We met the President of the organization, Matt Shepley, at a show in Michigan and we were impressed with his passion for the integrity of the sport and his passion for keeping it drug free.

How do you feel about the number of shows and different organizations that currently make up Natural Bodybuilding?

The fact that the NANBF and the OCB have merged together is wonderful for the sport. I think that all of the natural organizations need to work together to grow the sport of Natural Bodybuilding as a whole. As a promoter, my primary focus is to create a great experience for the athletes, I think that some of the natural organizations who refuse to work with the other organizations even ban their athletes from judging in other organizations need to rethink their policies because we are most definitely stronger together, if we want to make a stand against some of the larger unnatural organizations and shows we need to ban together not fight amongst ourselves.

Do you ever see a day when all of the major organizations will work together?

It's possible as I said the blending of two of the largest natural organizations is a great start.

Do you think the variety of organizations is good or bad for the athletes?

I think that the amount of natural shows offered is great for the athletes-but the organization bashing between some of the promoters is bad for the athletes- they just want to compete not get involved in the politics.

What is your background in Bodybuilding and Fitness?

We have been the dynamic duo for over 9 years. Together we work hand and hand on all of our athletes contest prep. We have both been active in the bodybuilding world, judging, competing, promoting or helping others prepare. We share our passion for fitness which is how we started promoting shows. After years of working in the medical field Jennifer changed career paths, finishing her degree in Health Science and obtaining several national certifications. Our goal is to grow the sport of natural bodybuilding.

How did you get started in promoting shows?

Matt Shepley decided to promote the first Natural Indiana from his home out of state. Jesse and I became his contact here in town. To "help him out". Next thing we knew the second annual Mr/Ms Natural Indiana was our show. After the first one went well we decided that Indiana needed a natural spring show too. What made you decide to become a promoter? We decided that we could really impact the world of natural bodybuilding by promoting two high quality well run shows in Indiana.

Tell us a little bit about the history of your shows, when it first started, how it has grown?

The First Natural Indiana was promoted by Matt Shepley four years ago, we took the show over after that first year and we have grown the event to be a Pro Qualifier with over 65 competitors last year. The Circle City Championships is our spring show and at the second annual show this past May we had 72 competitors and a great group of sponsors.

Who were your mentor(s), if any when you started promoting shows and how did they help you?

We first got involved "back stage" with Shannon Parker- He and Crystal really taught us a lot about how they kept their shows running smooth. Matt Shepley pretty much dropped the Natural Indiana on our laps and told us to run with it. Without the encouragement of these people the shows would not exist.

What are some of the challenges you have had to deal with as a promoter?

Getting the larger local gyms to display our fliers, they don't understand the benefit of promoting the sport.

What makes your show different from the others and why should competitors choose your shows?

We treat our competitors with the highest respect and try to accommodate even the smallest requests. We recognize that the athletes are our number one asset in growing the sport. We try to give everyone( even the audience) the intimacy of a small show on the large show level.

What are some of the most memorable moments from your show(s)?

We have stopped the show to bring up competitors and their spouses who are celebrating a one year wedding anniversary-everyone loved this one!

What are some of the funniest moments from your shows?

Our expediters "cleaning" the oil off the stage!!

If you could do it all over again...what, if anything, would you do differently?

I would not change a thing- each show we learn new things and try to adapt them to continue making the show better.

What do you wish that you knew then that you know now?

No late registration

How do you drug test at your show?

Polygraph or urinalysis? Both polygraph and urinalysis.

Is your show judged by weight class or by height class. Why did you choose the method you use?

Height Class It distributes the classes evenly and creates an even playing field for all competitors because they all have the same starting base.

How do you select your judging panel?

We look at competition and fitness experience and look for judges who are not from the area and we look for people who can be unbiased and give good feedback to the competitors.

What advice do you have for competitors getting ready for the show, o-n the day of the show and after the show is over?

Competitors getting ready- make a plan follow the plan and don't get too many opinions once you have begun your plan. On the day of the show- relax show off your hard work and ask questions (at our shows) we are here to make it a good experience for you. After the show- don't get too out of shape- it's easier to maintain a good physique than build one from scratch.
