Role Models in Bodybuilding/Figure
I really look up to Tanji
Johnson for a number of reasons including how long she’s
been in the fitness industry, her positivity, and how
supportive she is of other competitors and women in the
sport.
Bodybuilders/Figure Competitors
who physiques you most admire
Being a former track girl
myself, I love Erin Stern’s and Alicia Harris’s figure. I
study their photos for things to tweak and think about
during prep.
Bodybuilders/Figure Competitors
whose personalities you most admire
I met Cheryl Brown at the
Arnold Festival this year. She was incredibly warm, had
some great advice to share, and was so down to earth even
after having a juggernaut year in the sport. You have to
admire that kind of grace.
Highlights of Career
Winning my figure pro
card in two major bodybuilding federations in my first
year of competing. And getting started in the first place
after a period of being relatively sedentary.
Biggest Disappointments of Career
My prep for the Arnold
didn’t go as smoothly as I would have liked given some
life challenges. Lesson learned, I’ve since been able to
work through any obstacles that arise with less of a
negative impact on my training.
Best Body Part
I’d have to go with my
back or butt.
Most Challenging Body Part
Again my butt makes an
appearance, haha. I guess the payoff from all that work is
worth it!
Favorite Exercise
Stiff-legged deadlifts
and hanging knee raises.
Least Favorite Exercise
Burpees!
Traits you admire most in others
Self-awareness and
compassion
Traits
you admire most in yourself
Generosity and
open-mindedness
Favorite Movies
Love Jones, The American
President, Love Actually, Flashdance, Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind, Pretty in Pink, Wedding Crashers, A
Beautiful Mind, City of God, Superbad, Bring the Pain, Die
Hard
Favorite Actor
Kimberly Elise and Marcia
Gay Harden. They just bring it every time they’re on
screen. I also absolutely love and admire Cicely Tyson as
well.
Favorite Band or Performer
There are many. Adele is
amazing and so is Jill Scott. I love Amel Larrieux as
well, incredible voice. And I’ve loved Aerosmith since the
first time I heard ‘Walk This Way’.
Favorite Food
I can’t answer this
question, I’m such a foodie!
Favorite Cheat Day Treats
Sushi and a warm
chocolate chip cookie topped with ice cream. Yum!!
Favorite Automobile
Eh…I really stopped
paying attention to cars a long time ago. I wish I didn’t
have to own one and being from New York City, I didn’t
have to for the longest time. I wish they had less of a
negative impact on the environment…
Idea of a Perfect Vacation
Anywhere there’s a clean
beach, blue water, and fresh lobster!
Favorite TV Programs
Battlestar Galactica.
Best. Show. Ever. Other than that, I mostly watch news
shows but I love Family Guy and Everybody Loves Raymond.
I’d rather be watching something informative or actually
funny.
What would you be doing if you
weren't a Bodybuilder/Figure Competitor?
You know, I have no idea
but I’m glad it’s not something I really had to
contemplate. It’s great to find something you really love
and are passionate about.
Long Term Bodybuilding Ambitions
I’d like to qualify for
the Olympia this year and eventually win the title. I’d
also like to encourage more women of color to compete and
help to dispel any misconceptions they have around the
sport and industry in general.
What you like most about
Bodybuilding?
The camaraderie of people
who value health and fitness and support each other in
reaching their goals.
What you dislike most about
Bodybuilding?
That people do some
really unhealthy things to compete in this sport.
“Fitness” and “wellness” should be much more synonymous in
my opinion.
What advice would you give other
competitors?
Not just anyone can
properly train you to compete and not every piece of
advice you get is actually useful. Take the time to do
your own research and trust your instincts. If something
doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. And make sure you
give yourself enough time to prepare, starving yourself
and doing 3 hours a day of cardio isn’t necessary if you
train hard, eat right, and stick to the plan for the right
amount of time. At the end of the day, training to compete
is difficult, but it definitely doesn’t have to be so
hard.
A little more about you...
I come from an extremely
large and close family and was very fortunate to have
parents who stressed the importance of getting an
education. I attended the Milton Hershey school through
middle school and high school and was fortunate to attend
Yale University for undergrad and The New School for grad
school. I recently left my job as a Director of Data for a
public charter school district to pursue my passion for
fitness, food and transformation and will be opening my
own personal chef and nutrition consulting business later
this year. I truly believe that I have been blessed at
every moment of my life and I strive to live with
gratitude for these blessings at the forefront of my
consciousness every day.
