I really look up to Ava
Cowan for a number of reasons- the main one being she's
endured a lot in her life and has been vocal about sharing
her experiences with others. She's a fighter, and she
works hard despite the odds and I have the utmost
admiration for that type of resilient character
Bodybuilders/Figure Competitors
who physiques you most admire
Candice Keene, Erin
Stern, Ava Cowan, Alicia Marie
Bodybuilders/Figure Competitors
whose personalities you most admire
Ava Cowan and Erin Stern
Highlight of Career
I would have to say going
from 14th at last year's Team Universe to 2nd at last
year's North Americans.
In a matter of 5 weeks I
overhauled my training and worked my butt off- I was so
proud of my physique's transformation and the change in my
placing.
Biggest Disappointments of Career
I think this past Team Universe was a hard blow for me to
take, mentally. I endured some personal struggles in
preparing for the show, but felt more confident moving
into the competition then I actually ended up placing.
However, I took my placing with grace and resolve to learn
and improve from it.
Best Body part
I'd have to say my back
Most Challenging Body part
I wouldn't say I have a
challenging body part, my greatest challenge is always
maintaining a level of fullness in my muscle bellies while
leaning out.
Favorite Exercise
Anything intense- I love
plyometrics
Least Favorite Exercise
Standard "12 reps, 60
second rest" type training. It's not mentally stimulating
for me.
Traits you admire most in others
generosity, compassion, a
stong sense of faith in God, determination, diligence,
consistency, honesty, a positive outlook on life, patience
Traits you admire most in
yourself
My faith in God, my
strong sense of self, my stubborn nature, my work ethic
Favorite Movies
I LOVE movies, and the
list is too long to share, but a few that come to mind
are; When Harry Met Sally, Love Actually, The Shawshank
Redemption, Braveheart, Cinderella Man, Seabiscuit, Beauty
and the Beast, Sex and the City 1 and 2, Walk the Line,
and the Breakup.
Favorite Actor
Can't say as I have one,
although I'm a fan of watching anything with Vin Diesel in
it!
Favorite Band or Performer
I listen to such a wide
variety of music- but really anything that pumps me up for
the gym like dance/trance/electronica/, and a lot of
Christian/Gospel, I also love neo-soul, hip hop and R&B,
and acoustic/indie like Ani Difranco, who has been one of
my favorite artists since my jr high school years.
Favorite Food
A medium rare steak from
Outback with grilled asparagus and a baked sweet potato
Favorite Cheat Day Treats
I love dried fruit and
nut trail mix, organic dark chocolate, or organic natural
almond butter on rice cakes
Favorite Automobile
H3- I absolutely love my
2006 H3. I have it lifted with off-road tires- it's my
larger then life badass driving machine!
Idea of a Perfect Vacation
I really dislike getting
away from my routine, so ideally my favorite vacation
would be anywhere where I can still prep my food and eat
clean, healthy meals while enjoying some activity. I love
the beach because I love to read in the sun and just
relax, and since I love to hike I also enjoy the
mountains. I'm also a HUGE fan of Las Vegas and really
enjoy being out there for the Olympia every year.
Favorite TV Programs
Law and Order, Law and
Order SVU, Sex and the City, the Golden Girls, Man vs Food
What would you be doing if you weren't a
Bodybuilder/Figure Competitor? Probably the same
profession I have now- since I truly love what I do. I'm
the owner of my own nutrition consultation and training
company and I love working with clients and helping them
to achieve their fitness and health goals.
Long Term Bodybuilding Ambitions
To achieve my IFBB Pro
card in figure; to grace the cover of Oxygen, FitnessRx,
and Muscle and Fitness Hers, and to continue to inspire,
motivate, and encourage others to live a healthy, fit
lifestyle.
What you like most about
Bodybuilding?
I love all of it-
honestly. I enjoy the intensity of my training, I love the
structure and routine of my meals, I love preparing for a
show, and I enjoy my down time from competing as well.
There's nothing about the sport that I don't love.
What you dislike most about
Bodybuilding?
I don't "dislike" any
aspect of my sport. I feel both the highs and the lows of
any competitive journey are necessary in self discovery-
they help build diligence and dedication in my habits, and
ultimately even the trying days of any contest prep teach
me about how strong I am mentally.
What advice would you give other
competitors?
Work on building your
mental strength as well as your physical. Competing is so
much more about mental fortitude then it is about yor
physique. I truly believe that if you're of a strong mind
and spirit, the body will follow.
Consequently you can
have a phenomenal physique and yet not be focused
mentally, and that will manifest itself in your life. So-
understand that competing is much more of a mental
challenge then it ever will be physical.
A little more about you...
I was raised in a very
rural area of Pennsylvania, and grew up with a very close
knit relationship to my parents and my brother. At an
early age my parents, especially my father, instilled in
me the importance of working hard to achieve the things
you want in life. Both my parents were and are hard
workers, and my brother is equally as self motivated as I
am. I think that type of upbringing really is the reason
why this lifestyle suits me so well. I'm not afraid to
work hard for things I want, nor am I afraid to be
challenged. I'm a very passionate person, I'm passionate
about God, fitness and wellness, competing, and about life
in general. I feel every day I have on this earth is a
blessing and I try to be positive each and every minute of
my life.
I graduated college with a bachelor's in wellness
and sport science and a minor in athletic coaching. I
worked in corporate gyms for a few years before taking a
leap and going into business for myself. Since, I have
been blessed to work with over 100 clients both locally
and internationally, and am planning to attend college
again for nutrition in the near future. I love spending my
free time with friends and family and my dogs, going to
the movies, shopping, reading, writing, cooking ( I LOVE
TO COOK), traveling, hiking, and relaxing.
