When one wants to lose weight they often mean body
fat. Too many people fall into the "scale weight"
trap. The scale is unable to distinguish between bone,
muscle, organ, blood, and water weight. Using the
scale solely can lead to loss of muscle and increased
body fat.
To ensure you are losing fat and not muscle, a body
composition is necessary. Measuring your body fat is
the key element in providing long-lasting, and safe
fat loss.
Body fat percentage is the percentage of fat mass in
regards to total body weight. When you know your lean
body mass you are better apt to create a nutrition and
cardio program to prompt fat loss and maintain lean
muscle mass.
Keep in mind that a certain amount of fat is needed to
insulate the body and cushion the organs and delicate
tissues. Your goal is to get rid of the fat covering
your muscle detail.
There are an array of body fat testing devices to
choose from. Some testing devices require the
assistance of a trained professional, and others can
be done easily and in the privacy of your own home.
The Omron body fat tester is quick, convenient, and
fairly accurate provided you follow a few guidelines.
The Omron Body Fat Tester
The Omron Body Fat Analyzer can determine your fat
weight, body fat percentage, and lean body mass (LBM).
It's a handheld body fat testing device that provides
you with your body fat percentage, and pounds of fat
in 7 seconds flat!
The Omron body fat tester is a weak, yet safe
electrical current that goes through the body. It's so
weak that you can't even feel it. It measures the
resistance the body gives as the current flows through
it. Fat has little, if any, conductivity. Therefore,
this device can determine the ratio of fat to other
tissues in your body. This handy little device is one
of my favorite body composition methods. It's about
98% accurate if you use it correctly.
Factors That Can Affect the Omron Reading
General factors that can affect the reading are those
individuals with higher or lower amount of bone mass
and water content. Such candidates are children, those
who are ill, pregnant women, the elderly, and those
suffering osteoporosis. Bodybuilders are among the
few, but I have found a fool-proof method of making
this little gizmo very close to accurate every time.
How to correctly use the Omron
To receive an accurate reading with the Omron stand
upright with your feet about shoulder-width apart and
hold the unit directly in front of you. Your arms
should be parallel to the floor with a slight, natural
bend in your elbows. Do not grip the sensors hard,
don't tense up, and don't stress. Remain absolutely
still and press the start button.
Accurate Reading on the Omron
The best method for getting a very close to accurate
reading is to take the test first thing in the morning
before you do anything, even washing your hands. You
basically have to roll out of bed and take the test.
The only thing you can do before taking the test is
using the restroom.
Athletes and the Omron
For those ladies who resistance train, it works best
if you take a male and female reading and use that
average, then take away 1. If your Omron has an
"athletic setting" use it if you workout.
For example, if you are 130 pounds and you take a
reading on the female setting and it reads 20.3%.
Then, you take a reading using the male setting and it
reads 16.1%. The average of the two is 18.2%. Subtract
1and your body fat is 17.2%. With that, you know you
have 22 pounds of fat and 108 pounds of muscle.
Faulty Reading on the Omron
You can receive a faulty reading if you do not grasp
the electrode grooves correctly (too tight or not firm
enough). A faulty reading can also be a result of
bending your elbows too much, holding your arms too
high or too low, or moving during testing.
Other factors that can affect the reading are
dehydration, wet or damp hands, eating or drinking
before the reading, unnatural body temperature from
showering or working out, etc.
Breast implants may affect the Omron reading.
Consistency, Consistency, Consistency!
